The story
Why The Bench exists.
I wasn't planning to start a company.
Then I was made redundant.
I'd spent years building and selling, sitting across from business owners and helping them grow. One day I was doing that. The next I was, in the language everyone uses, “open to work.”
Nothing about what I could do had changed. Just the title under my name.
And that's the thing I couldn't stop thinking about.
Not just for me, but for the friends and colleagues around me who had achieved incredible things and suddenly found themselves figuring out what came next.
People who had built sales teams, launched products, grown businesses and led functions. People who had spent years creating value for the organisations they worked for.
The best people don't suddenly become less valuable because they're between roles.
The work you've done, the lessons you've learned, the teams you've built and the problems you've solved don't suddenly stop mattering because a role ends. The talent is still there. The experience is still there. The ability to create value is still there.
I started talking to other people in the same position. Friends, former colleagues and people I'd worked alongside over the years. Some of the most capable people I knew were suddenly spending their days trying to figure out what came next.
And I noticed something else.
Redundancies don't just happen to individuals. They break apart teams, people who had spent years learning how to build things together. The trust and shared experience don't disappear. They just get scattered.
At the same time, I knew the other side of it.
Because I'd spent years sitting across from growing businesses that desperately needed exactly these people.
A proper sales function.
A marketing engine.
An operating rhythm.
Someone who had built the thing before.
But they couldn't justify another full-time hire, couldn't attract the right person, or weren't ready to make the investment.
Two problems, sitting right next to each other, and a market that does a terrible job of connecting them.
So I built The Bench.
The idea is simple.
Bring proven people into the businesses that need them, for focused pieces of work, to build what those businesses can't build alone.
The people get to keep doing meaningful work.
The businesses get access to proven leaders and the team around them to actually get the work done.
Not just advice. Real execution. Real outcomes.
And nobody's hard-won talent has to sit idle waiting for the perfect full-time role to appear.
Why this works.
- 01
Proven operators, suddenly available.
- 02
Growing businesses that need them.
- 03
The Bench builds and runs the function.
- 04
Growth and income.
It was the thing I wished existed the week I was let go.
So I made it.
If you've built things and you're between roles, or simply open to a different way of working, I'd love to hear from you.
The Bench began because capable people should not lose the value of their work when a job ends.
Today, Atlas records the work. The Bench puts that experience back to work.
The next opportunity might be a full-time role, fractional work or a focused team project. The work stays with the person. The need starts with the business.
And if you run a business that needs to get work done, start with what you need and we will help find the right route.
